Is it a big deal to buy a new computer with XP now and not with Vista?

Ok I have been with the same computer with Windows 98 SE for like 8 years, I desperately need a new computer now because mine is obsolete, it has too many errors, and the new programs that are coming aren’t compatible with mine. I am a college student so my computer is very important to me.
I am planning on buying a new PC this summer, but now that Windows Vista came I don’t know if I should wait until people finally determine that Vista is a good OS to use with not so many errors etc, or don’t pay much attention to vista and just buy one with Windows XP.
Whats the big deal of buying one with Windows XP now? Should I do it?

Just go with XP. Vista uses 1GB of RAM to even use the OS, not counting applications. XP is easier on your computer.

Absolutly. Now, this is my opinion, but I have used the beta and prerelease versions of windows vista. It looks good, but is incredibly slow and counterproductive. I also just read an article in pc world with benchmarking and time tests from vista as compared to xp. Vista is jaw droppingly slower. I would just buy the pc with xp now, and if you absolutly want vista, you can upgrade later. Just be carefull, in a few months, you won’t be able to buy a pc without vista on it.

Any pc you purchase will come with Windows XP preloaded. However, the newer (and more expensive) computers will come “Vista ready”. Meaning they have the ram, video card, etc ready if you want to upgrade to Vista. I just purchased a laptop that has XP and is Vista ready. Once Vista is released bug-free I may considering upgrading however until then Windows XP will be sufficient enough.

It isn’t a big thing. If you think that you will keep the new machine for several years, then make sure that the components are Vista ready (most are.) I’m sure XP will be supported for quite awhile before Microsoft gives up on it. Personally, I invested in XP so that I didn’t have to roll the dice with a new system.

I would suggest buying a machine that comes with XP but is Vista capable. And I have heard that Vista will be as good or better than XP

by this summer your computer will come with vista so this question is really moot

Your best bet is to buy a computer with XP, but is Vista compatible. XP is a solid architecture and Visa is an unknown quantity. Get a machine that will accept Vista when you are comfortable that all the bugs are worked out.

I would highly recommend sticking with XP. I am an IT Technician and went through HXXX with customers who thought “they had to have XP when it came out”. I never recommend a new OS for at least a year, till they get the bugs out of it. As far as the proclaimed security benefits, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Vista was already hacked just after they released it to Corporations on Nov. 30, soooo… Also companies with all the big bucks are holding off simply due to what happened when XP came out. Not to mention, all current systems will be able to run Vista, and the ones that can, will cost more due to the hardware required.
And finally, if you do go out and buy a system that says Vista capable, do you know what that means? Simply it is capable, with the additional cost of more memory, correct video card etc.

The newest OS doesn’t mean the best OS, so I would say better lived with XP for now. Of which, the new computer that you gonna buy, just make sure that it’s good enough to change the OS later, if need be. Moreover, my workplace now still testing Vista, we still can’t rest assure that Vista will compatible to the system, which we are using right now. Also, the application in the market are mostly compatible for XP, not Vista. As what you said, you are college student, so… better use XP than Vista for the time being.
